Lithium vs. Gel Batteries: What's the Difference for Your Solar Installation?
The battery is the heart of any standalone solar system: it’s what stores the energy produced during the day to release it at night or during a power outage. Two technologies dominate the Cameroonian market: lithium (LiFePO₄) batteries and gel (VRLA) batteries. Here are the key differences to know before choosing your installation.
Lifespan
This is the most decisive criterion. A gel battery typically offers a few hundred charge/discharge cycles, while a LiFePO₄ lithium battery can reach 6,000 to 8,000 cycles, often meaning a lifespan of more than 10 years in normal residential use. Over the long run, the actual cost of using a lithium battery is generally more favorable, despite a higher upfront investment.
Depth of discharge (DoD)
Gel batteries generally support a discharge limited to around 50% of their capacity to preserve their lifespan. Lithium batteries, on the other hand, tolerate a deep discharge of up to 95% without significant degradation — meaning that at equal rated capacity, a lithium battery delivers more usable energy on a daily basis.
Weight and footprint
At equal capacity, a lithium battery is noticeably lighter and more compact than a gel battery, making transport and installation easier, and allowing for more modern designs (wall cabinets, stackable or wheeled mobile systems).
Maintenance and safety
Both technologies are largely maintenance-free. Modern lithium batteries, however, include a BMS (Battery Management System) that monitors voltage, temperature and current in real time, with automatic protection against overcharging, excessive discharge and overheating — an added layer of safety worth noting.
Upfront budget
At equal capacity, gel batteries are often cheaper to buy than lithium batteries. They can be an entry option for a tight budget, provided you accept a shorter lifespan and more frequent replacement.
